Pet Safe? MY BUTT!

THIS IS A WARNING TO ALL! IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT GETTING A DOG BARK COLLAR PLEASE READ!!! AND TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!
This is the collar we bought! Scroll down to see what it did to our beloved pup! It has no warnings so I guess we had to learn the hard way! Pet Safe? Oh Ya?

Well this past week we put a dog bark collar on Neeku. We really researched it and asked the lady at the Pet Co. store about it and she told us this was the one she had for her dog. We read the directions and it says that all you have to do is put it on. The dog must be over 8lbs, which Neeku is, and if they have a lot of fur to shave it down to the skin. Well, Brody did cut some fur, but didn't shave him because I didn't want him too! I really felt bad for doing this at all, but they say it really doesn't hurt the dogs! It is a static shock, just like when someone shocks you after rubbing their feet on the ground. We thought we'd give it a try just for a week or two then take it off for good, cause we figured he'd learn quickly! Neeku is a very smart pup! Well, Brody decided to take it off and let Neeku in the house the other day, and found something really awful! If you get weeak when you see or hear about yucky sad things just don't read anymore. Neeku's neck had three holes in it, that were oozing with puss, and it really smelled awful! I felt so bad, I called the vet immediately and after a little while he called me back and said it was common, not way common, but common enough. He said it is like a burn. We just needed to put neosporin on it and keep it clean. And he said it would heal in a couple of days. We were to bring him in soon anyway for his shots, so it worked out. It is already scabbed over and it never seemed to bother him once we took it off. It burned him though? I was so angry!!! Where was this on the warning on the box, how come the lady didn't tell me about the possibilities? They need to tell people what could happen just like they tell us with our medicines and well, everything that is sold for human use! Are dogs not important? Do they not matter? I am just sick about it to this day! I didn't sleep at all that first night, it probably hurt me more than him, but I just felt sooo bad! I didn't want to do it in the first place, but our neighbors all have dogs and when one dog barks they all join in and thats a nightmare. Well, anyway it is better now, but I just wanted to warn all of you what could happen if you use a bark collar! We are soooo sorry Neeks! We love you!

that is so sad, I'm sorry. But does he bark anymore? My dog's a barker, I wonder if a different brand wouldn't cause that problem.

Oh that is so sad!! He is the cutest dog though. Good thing you checked when you did, think how bad it could have gotten.

How long had your dog worn the collar before you took it off? You should never have a bark collar on a dog for more than 6-8 hours at a time. As a Vet, I can tell you these are not burns, but rather a condition known as Pressure Necrosis. This is caused by leaving the bark collar on too long and the probes on the collar rub against your dog's neck. I have researched this extensively and have found that the electronic correction given by these devises is not nearly strong enough to cause burns.

Here is some additional information and concurrence from other vets: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Ask-Veterinarian-700/f_3885974.htm

Thank you anonymous for your post. He wore it for a week. We took it off a lot for the first probably 5 days, then left in on for about two days straight. I know it wasn't tight because it would slip to the side, but he may have just rubbed it too much or really I don't know, but I feel really bad, I should have done even more research about this product. I just heard and read all good reviews. Now I know, Neeku is fine, and I just want to spread the word about the possibilities! Thank you for your insight. I read the link you posted and it was interesting!
